Six Month Hoopiversary

28 Oct

Monday of this week was my SIX month “hoopiversary”! If you would have told me 6 months ago that I would soon be hooping daily, reversing our entire route to trek to California for something called “Hoopcamp”, and that I would start yet another blog about this addictive circular toy….I would tell you that you were crazy πŸ™‚ But it’s all true!

Six months in the hoop has given me JOY.
It’s brought the most amazing people into my life.
It’s become more than just a hobby…it’s a way of life!

There wasn’t really a nice space to film at the RV park we’re currently staying at…so we drove down the road a bit and pulled off to the side when we saw a pretty mountain. πŸ™‚ I was a bit distracted with Lucy yelling at me from the car, Bella spinning her hoop offΒ  on the side, and men in large trucks yelling “YEAH!! Keep doin’ that!!” out their window as they drove by. Good times.

It’s not perfect. It’s not a performance. But it’s me hooping…put to a song in honor of one of Bella’s favorite movies…High School Musical. Oh yes. Yes I did.

Happiest of Hoopiversaries to you! Who knew that I would wander to your RV’ing family life, unschooling blog and discover hooping? You are inspirational, chica! May I be as good (and not fear polypro as I do now) by the time I’m at 6 months!

  3. Jeanna October 28, 2010 at 4:35 pm #

Giiiirrrlll! You look like you’ve been hooping for 6 years, not 6 months! Beautiful! Joyful! I love it!

    • livelightly October 28, 2010 at 4:49 pm #

Thanks Jeanna! I get excited thinking about where I will be in 6 years with my hooping. I get so critical of myself, especially watching myself on this video…and just coming from camp where there are amazing hoopers at every turn. I have to remember how far I’ve come! πŸ™‚

WOOHOOOOOO! What a great, happy video. You move so gracefully, and look totally natural. Thank you for sharing your love with the world! I was inspired by you and Tara posting about it and have been really enjoying learning the basics.

Did you mostly follow tutorials online or did you learn mostly from other people in person?

    • livelightly October 28, 2010 at 4:46 pm #

Thanks Brianna! It was a mixture of both. I enrolled in SaFire’s first 2 online hoop classes, watched a lot of YouTube, and hooped with others. I’ve taken one private lesson, and 3 or 4 regular classes + camp. Hooping with other people is really key…you can help and encourage each other!

Gosh, you are so good. My hoop and I have kind of had a bit of a break from each other lately from being so busy but I need to get back to it. It brings me so much joy. Where’d you get your polypro? I’ve been thinking about making that change. I feel bogged down with my normal tubing. And I think it’s hilarious that you put the high school musical song over it. πŸ˜‰

    • livelightly October 28, 2010 at 5:27 pm #

Thanks Katelyn! I did a trade with HappyLoveHoops for the Polypro. I just blogged about it…with links to other vendors. I think Kendra is taking a break right now:

      Crazy For Polypro

  9. Julie October 28, 2010 at 5:54 pm #

Sara, your dreads are looking awesome these days and your hooping skills are ah-mazing!! Hoping I can hoop that well when I get to my six month hoopiversary!!

I did take my hoop to renfaire a couple weeks ago and actually hooped near the drum circle (not inside the circle cause it was getting a little TOO crazy at that point)…and had a few people cheering me on…something that would totally have made me feel self-conscious just a couple months ago!!

My next hoop is definitely gonna be a polypro…I’ve already told my husband that is one of the things on my Christmas wish list (that and a Kindle being the big wants). I have even got my husband to pick up a hoop and try hooping…by showing him some of the videos you’ve shared of guy hoopers…but he won’t hoop in public yet!!

SARA!!! Way to go!!! I love that you were smiling through the whole thing!! You are awesome!!! I am so impressed!

    • livelightly October 29, 2010 at 11:48 am #

Awww thanks Angela πŸ™‚ I have to make a conscious effort to smile because otherwise I get my “seriously hooping” face on. ha

  11. Kristin October 28, 2010 at 11:28 pm #

Well, of course, if they saw that hot mama hoopin like that they’d say those things! Seriously…you look lovely, glowing, happy and the hooping is pretty incredible. πŸ˜‰ love ya, friend!

    ps…maybe i’ll go hoop a bit. πŸ™‚

    • livelightly October 29, 2010 at 11:47 am #

Ha ha πŸ™‚ Thanks mama…yes, you should definitely go hoop!

  12. Katelyn October 29, 2010 at 1:33 am #

I actually asked her if she wanted to trade! haha I never got a response but she seems pretty far behind on orders right now.

I can’t believe you have only been hooping 6 months. I had no idea. I thought you had been at this for years! I first caught wind of one of your blogs through some women on GCM talking about your lovely little house you have photos of on flickr, and then I stumbled across you again on HoopCity. What a small world. You’re a great hooper- you show so much fun and excitement in the hoop as well πŸ˜€

    • livelightly October 29, 2010 at 11:46 am #

Thanks Shekinah! :)It is a small world…it’s always fun to hear how people find each other on the interwebs πŸ™‚

  14. sara October 29, 2010 at 11:08 am #

Wow! You have improved a ton since your last video and I thought the first one was great!
This may sound crazy to ask but I will try anyway :). The tricks that you did on the video around 1:53 to 2:09 (these are the times) are really cool. One is you sticking your arms down and back up while the hoop is switching directions (it looks as if the hoop is going counter clockwise and then clockwise) and the one I really love is starting with your hoop above your head and bringing it down over your body and back up while spinning. Do you know of any on line tutorials to this trick? Also do you know if Rich and Spiral’s new dvd is going to have instructions on it or is it just going to be of them hooping? I really appreciate if you have time to answer…I am pretty new to hooping but right now all I am able to do is practice at home with the internet as my guide. I have a young nursling that prevents me from dreaming of any workshops right now. thanks for the inspiration… Oh, I also read your post at walk slowly, live wildly… I love when you talk about Jesus. Thanks!

    • livelightly October 29, 2010 at 11:45 am #

      Hi Sara…
The move at 1:53 is a “break”…I guess I’ve never seen a tutorial on it, but it’s almost impossible to do without a SUPER lightweight hoop. It would need to be 1/2 inch with little to no taping to do it without much bruising. I didn’t start doing that one until I had my polypro hoop because all of a sudden it became really easy πŸ™‚

The second move is called a Vortex:

It looks harder than it really is…and is a great move to learn when you’re just beginning so you can impress your friends πŸ™‚ ha

As far as Rich and Spiral’s DVD…yes, it’s an instructional as well as “showcase” video. It also has interviews and showcases with some of the best hoopers around! πŸ™‚ You’ll LOVE it.

      • sara October 29, 2010 at 10:47 pm #

thanks for answering my questions sara! and for the link to the vortex. I am very excited to try it!
