A Lesson With Laura

21 May

My Mother’s Day gift this year was a private hooping lesson with the fabulous Laura Scarborough, founder of HoopCircle in Austin, TX. I was giddy with excitement leading up to that day. When I arrived, Laura put on some sweet tunes and we started warming up. She gave me a lot of new ideas and ways of moving to promote “hoop awareness” 🙂

Over the next hour, she filled my mind with oodles of hoop goodness. So much new stuff! It was great to be able to ask her about little problems I had been having with certain moves. I wish I could have had TWO hours!! The video above is a little peek at our lesson. And even though it’s weird to see myself hooping for the first time (haven’t had any mirrors around!)….I’m glad I took it. This way, I can look back in a year and see how much progress I’ve made!

Almost all hoopdance instructors have private lessons available. If you have a chance to take a lesson in your area…do it! It’s so much fun and the one-on-one help is priceless. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

One last thing…I loved Laura’s rainbow travel hoop so much that I just had to order myself one. It arrived last week and it’s the hoop in my header photo for this blog! It’s so pretty!! She sells them on her site as well as locally in Austin.

That was fabulous! I first found you through a friend on MDC, and have been following your journeys since then, but I gotta say, the hooping never fails to leave me smiling! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Sara… Your new passion has given me a new interest. It’s like ever since you took up hooping, it’s all over the blogosphere. I’m seeing it everywhere. I LOVE the rainbow hoop you were using during the video. Is that one that you made? I know I saw a pic of ya’ll making hoops on your flickr stream. Could you write a post for those of us that are on a tight budget about how to make your own hoop? Like how much tubing/pipe did you buy and what length? How do you put it together so that the ends don’t pull apart?

I was looking at some of the hoopnotica hoops and superhooper hoops and I eventually hope to get one of those… but how can I make my own now?

HA… it might would have helped if I would have read the WHOLE post. Definitely my first purchase will be one of the rainbow hoops. By the way… if ya’ll head by the Southeast, we’d love to see you again. Maybe by then, YOU could give me a hoop lesson!

I love this new website! You are an amazing hooper! I can’t believe you’ve only been doing this a few weeks.:)

I finally made hoops for the family, although taping has proved to be challenging. Any tips?

I ‘m excited to get my “hooping on” again! Thanks for the inspiration!

Taping is kind of an “art” 🙂 It just takes practice. Here are a few tips:

*Always lay metallic/glitter tape first. It doesn’t stretch so it stays a bit more even. Plus, you need to cover the edges of that tape with gaffers or vinyl for durability.

*I like to stand up and put my food on the bottom of the hoop while I tape.

*Use your fingers to SMOOTH the tape around the tubing as you go. Check often to make sure it’s not kinking up or getting bubbles.

The more you do, the better you get at it. Have fun!

watching this video is mesmerizing. who knew that something so fun could be found in a hoop? i’m inspired to maybe buy one or make my own and rediscover my love of hooping. i left it somewhere in my adolescent past.

Hi there, I will attribute you and this blog to my getting into these beautiful art! Thanks for the video which is now the tipping point for me. BTW what is the name of the first song in the video-LOVE!

I just got my first *trick* tonight… the corkscrew/vortex thing! Woo! I am clumsy and hardly graceful. So I was thrilled 🙂 Watching your video clips of your private lesson gave me good ideas… thanks for posting it!

  16. livelightly May 25, 2010 at 2:53 am #

Jessica…that’s awesome! Pretty impressive considering that’s several tricks in one. Are you still in Brainerd? We head up there in a week. We should hoop!

    • Jessica May 27, 2010 at 12:12 am #

      Still in Brainerd!

I will admit, I’d probably be a little intimidated to hoop with ya 😉 But if schedules work, I’d be silly to not take advantage of hoop time with someone else! And. I’d love to see hoop tape live and in person 🙂

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I ordered a rainbow hoop from Laura after seeing yours 🙂
What is the name of the first song in the video? I love it. It would be great if you put a mix with your favorite songs together that get you hooping 🙂 I would love love love that!

    Your enthusiasm truly is contagious!
